The Story Behind EDGE for the icebound: Precision Skate Sharpening in Utah
At EDGE for the icebound, our story began in 2020 with a simple love for the ice. Our two kids discovered their passions: our son dove into hockey, while our daughter embraced the artistry of figure skating.

But as any skating family knows, keeping skates in top condition is essential, and we quickly realized it was harder than it should be. We often drove long distances for sharpening, only to receive inconsistent results.
​
Frustration turned into determination. I started sharpening our kids’ skates, then friends' and teammates'. What began as a practical way to help my kids quickly developed into a full-fledged passion.
​
I wanted to understand more than simply how to sharpen a skate. I wanted to understand why a skate feels the way it does on the ice. I read and studied Sid Broadbent’s Ice Skateology to better understand the principles behind skate sharpening and blade geometry. From there, I kept learning, experimenting, and investing in better equipment. One sharpening machine became another; profiling entered the picture, and before I knew it, I had amassed more skate sharpening and profiling machines, tools, gauges, and gear than I ever imagined I would.

And I loved it!

Along the way, word began to spread, and it reinforced something I was already beginning to realize: skaters in our area were looking for something better.

That’s how EDGE was born, out of necessity, fueled by passion, and built around a simple belief: every skater deserves precision, consistency, and care in their sharpening.

What started with our own kids has grown into serving hockey players and figure skaters throughout Herriman, Daybreak, Riverton, Bluffdale, and the surrounding South Valley, and increasingly skaters from well beyond our immediate area who find us online or through referrals.

Today, EDGE is about more than just putting a sharp edge on a skate. It’s about understanding the skater, their equipment, and how sharpening and profiling work together to affect how they feel on the ice.
